Improvisation is a field which is unknown to most ,classical’ musicians. The participants of the workshop are going to experience the world and themselves as a space for ideas and creativity. They are going to have a look into historical improvisation as well as into many different concepts of the 20th and 21st century including jazz and the many facettes of contemporary music. Learning to look ,beyond’ and touching the ,unknown’ is an experience that the group is going to seek and experience during this workshop.

Performing with Courage
By Prof. Mieko Kanno
Coordinated by Dr. Anothai Nitibhon & Dr. Pongthep Jitduangprem
Description:
This project is a small, hands-on experiment on how to gain your own ‘voice’ as a musician, who not only plays great works in the existing music literature but also plays ‘music’ as your own. In this sense, the ‘music’ can be existing works or your own composition/arrangement. The point is to learn about artistic ownership, and invigorate the pleasure you feel about music-making. Mieko’s ‘postcard project’ provides material at the starting point for the class. We aim to generate positive energy, a sense of ownership over performance, through a ‘bite-size’ experiment to share amongst the participants.

Virtual Reality
by Al Caudullo
Coordinated by Dr. jean-David Caillouët
Description:
This four-day seminar focuses on exploring the opportunities of virtual reality video as a storyteller medium. As we head into the beginnings of the Metaverse, virtual reality video presents itself as the perfect gateway. The first time you have an immersive experience in a VR headset, it becomes clear that this new form of storytelling has arrived and is the future. This seminar will examine immersive storytelling's surprising history and evolution and what is possible today. As part of our history lesson, we will explain what an HMD (Head Mounted Display)and an NFD (Near Field Display) are and how they work. After our VR history lesson, we will go on to explain the different VR video formats and experience these differences for themselves while donning VR headsets. They experience life underwater in 3D VR180 and have a 360 video flight over California in a vintage P40E Warhawk WWII aircraft, among other VR experiences. Next, you will get hands-on with 360 and VR180 cameras and learn the pre-production and production techniques necessary for a successful VR video. Then, you will work in two-person teams to create their own videos. You can use your musical talents as performers in some videos. Finally, we will have others create a 360 VR tour of the Rama VIII gardens. On the last day of the seminar, we will discuss the post-production workflow and present the VR video projects. This will include a general critique and discussions of each VR video, what they like, dislike, and what could be done to improve the videos.
